International Business Careers

International business careers are not quite the same as business careers in the United States; you must have a degree and experience, and in return, you will be able to see the world and get paid well for it. There are numerous positions are available worldwide including positions in Foreign Service and diplomatic services and even sales and marketing. Once you earn your MBA, you can begin working and gaining experience, as you prove yourself to your employer, you will also be earning the right to be promoted into an international business career once your company goes global and your supervisor feels you are ready. While earning a B.A. or Master’s in business administration, some schools offer degrees with global management focuses which will kick start the students’ international business careers. When you decide that a career in international business is what you want to strive for, be sure to take courses that will help you to live worldwide, including foreign languages; these classes may help you stand out from the rest of the pack when going for a global position.

Diplomatic Services

Careers in international business will help you on your way to becoming a full-fledged diplomat in another country. These positions generally require extensive experience in management as well as at least an MBA. Positions included in this classification are management officers, who run U.S. embassies in various countries worldwide; consular officers, who protect American travelers in other countries; economic officers, who basically ensure the United States economic status remains intact through fair trade; political officers, and public diplomacy officers. All of these positions work together to protect not only the citizens of the United States, but also the reputation and financial growth, all while working abroad during careers in international business. Before anyone can fill any of these positions, they must go through the Foreign Service Officer Test and they also must agree to live anywhere they are sent; therefore, they do not have a choice as to what country they must live in. Since you do not have a choice as to what country you live in, it is recommended that you speak multiple languages fluently to ensure that you can communicate effectively with the people.

International Marketing

The sales portion of international business careers involves both selling the product as well as marketing the product in a way that is appealing to those in foreign countries. It is important that people who specialize in international marketing have extensive knowledge of the culture that they are trying to sell to. This is why it is best if the international marketing manager lives in that country, not only to ensure that the cultures are respected, but also that the product is being marketed in a way that is effective. Careers in international business, including international marketing, require that you have extensive experience, usually a few years, on top of your degree in business, on top of an MBA, preferably with a focus on international business, although there are instances where you may be eligible for an internship while you are still in college. If international business careers are what you want to do after graduation, an internship is your best opportunity to get your foot in the door for the career you want.
