Career Opportunities
Certification is common in a wide variety and number of universities. Most certifications deal with service-related industries. Common service technicians such as mechanics, plumbers, electricians, construction workers, computer technicians, etc. Certification is often needed for professions that require a college degree such as accountants who seek to become a certified public accountant or CPA. A number of other positions such as pilots require certification, and much of the knowledge needed can be learned through an online certificate program combined with instruction at a physical location.
Online Universities
There are many online universities that offer online certificate programs. Unlike online degrees, an online certificate program is not approved by an accreditation organization, but must be recognized by professional societies and organizations that often oversee that particular industry. Organizations such as the American Bar Association for the law profession, the American Medical Association for Doctors, the American Dental Association for dentists, etc. are considered the authoritative bodies for their profession and those seeking professional certification need to ensure that their certificate is recognized or provided by these organizations. Most online universities will name the professional organization associated with their online certificate program in the description of the program. If the university does not provide the information on their website, potential certification candidates should contact the professional organization directly to determine local or online certificate programs approved by their organization.
