How to Get Hands-On Experience While Taking Online College Courses

Taking online classes is great for those who have a busy schedule and may not have the time or the transportation to attend on campus lecture sessions. Although you won’t be on campus to engage yourself in student clubs, organizations, and internships, there are still ways that you can get hands-on experience to accompany your major. Here is a step by step guide on how you can accomplish this.

The first thing you will need to do is to write a list of all the things you could do that are related to your major. For example, if your major is early childhood education, some of the things you could put on your list are volunteering at an elementary school, interning as a student teacher, working at a child care center, etc. Think about things that you would enjoy doing and that would look good on your resume.

The next step is to research some of the things on your list. Find local companies and organizations that are looking for volunteers, interns, and employees. The easiest one to get is a volunteer position and if you can afford not getting paid and have the time, it will be a great opportunity for you. Once you have a list of these positions, decide which ones you would like to apply for.

Apply to as many as you can. Internships are competitive, so make sure you give as much information about yourself as you can. Put together a resume that highlights past work experience, volunteer experience, language fluency, skills, and personality traits. The more information they have about you, the better chance you have of getting the position. You must be logical as well. If you know you won’t have the time for a position, don’t apply for it. You don’t want to take on more than you can handle.

The last thing you need to do is wait. If you don’t hear back from the company or organization with a week or two, try giving them a call. If you end up getting a position or two or even a volunteer position, add all experience that you gain to your resume.
