Fire Inspectors and Investigators

Fire Inspectors are responsible for inspecting businesses and public locations to ensure that local and state fire codes are being complied with and that there are no fire hazards. Fire Investigators determine the cause of a fire and collect evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare reports when arson or criminal negligence is suspected.

They are also involved in the planning and construction process to asses plans and ensure the building is being constructed in compliance with fire codes. When a problem is found during an inspection, the Fire Inspector and Investigator is expected to make suggestions on how violations could be quickly corrected. Inspectors must also be able instruct and explain fire code regulations and changes to architects, contractors, attorneys, engineers, etc.

Fire Inspectors and investigators must remain knowledgeable on the latest regulations, safety procedures, and firefighting techniques. They also help develop fire exit plans, and may be called on to testify in court if arson or criminal negligence is suspected to have cause a fire.

Most fire inspectors and investigators have some experience in fire fighting that they received after completing a high school diploma or GED certificate. Be sure to check out the programs being offered in many locations.
