Back To College Basics: Ten Ways To Be A Better Class Participant
Being a class contributor is very important if you want to succeed in college. Not only will you learn and retain more information but you will stand out to your professor and gain the respect of your peers. Some key components of being a major class participant include:
• Don’t hide in the back of the classroom. Students who sit in the front of the class are less distracted by others and can focus on the professor.
• Always do your homework so you are prepared for classroom discussions. You will benefit greatly from the reinforcement.
• Take advantage of forming study groups.
• Repeat the question if you don’t completely understand.
• Arrive to class early and don’t be in a rush to leave.
• Take complete notes for lectures and readings so you will have plenty to discuss.
• Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion in class discussion, you will likely awake others to new ideas and your point of view.
• Try to ask at least three questions per class.
• Try to make at least three comments per class.
• Make sure you talk one-on-one with your professors and personally introduce yourself. Briefly tell them why their class is important to you and what you hope to gain from it.
If you partake in classroom discussions and work well with you peers and professors, you are sure to gain confidence as a student and will be successful throughout your college career.
