What Not to Do at a Career Expo
As a college student getting ready to graduate and embark on real life, attending career expos and meeting recruiters is an important part of finding a good job. One of the gals we follow on Tumblr, Toni Sheree, recently attended a college career expo was shocked at how some college kids presented themselves. Today’s blog on what not to do at a career expo is based off of Toni’s observations.
- Don’t dress like you’re on your way to the club. We realize you can wear practically whatever you want to at college, but your future boss is going to demand a higher standard of excellence. While dress codes have relaxed in corporate America, they have not expanded to include miniskirts, cleavage-bearing tops, or see-through material. Do yourself a favor and opt for a collared shirt and nice pants instead, saving the club clothes for after hours. Your cup size will not get you a job. Or at least not a respectable one.
- Don’t wear clothes that are too tight. The unfortunate reality is that if you are a size 12 trying to fit into a size 10, it won’t work. You’ll look bigger than you are and draw unwanted attention to your body. Wear clothes that fit, even if it means going up a size. Cut out the clothing tag if it makes you feel better. A good rule of thumb? When clothes fit, they should flow smoothly over your body. If you have a hard to fit body, get a good tailor — they’ll help your clothes fit like a glove.
- Don’t forget to work on your handshake. A handshake can build rapport and credibility with recruiters at career fairs. A firm handshake with two to three pumps is ideal and will communicate confidence. Stay away from the bonecrusher and limp fish handshakes.
It’s important to pay attention to how you look and present yourself in a professional environment. Stand up straight, look people in the eye, and you’ll be seen as competent, capable, and employable. Give it a try.
