6 Green Tips For Students

Take It Easy

An increasing number of people are “going green” recently, and one group that really could use some change are college students. There are a variety of ideas of how someone can help the environment, obviously you can’t do all of them but taking on one at a time you will help reduce your individual carbon footprint and become an example for others. Most people don’t change because they are either lazy or uninformed.

Change Your Routine
As a student it can be pretty difficult to be green. I understand that and have thought a lot about simple things college students can implement into their daily lives to be more environmentally friendly. Below are six simple steps to help you do your part in taking care of our land and earth. As I said before it may be difficult to take all of these on at once, so choose something that you think you is the most important for you to fix and write reminders to help you do it.

  • Recycle Batteries: College students use a lot of batteries. From wireless controllers to portable mist-fans (always great for studying in the sun) we use a lot and usually just throw them away. Batteries can be very harmful to the land when they leak acid, which eventually can go into the water. There are places everywhere where you can recycle your batteries, keep an extra small storage box to hold all your dead batteries.
  • Shorter Showers: Try to avoid taking any shower over 5 minutes. It really isn’t that difficult to wash your body and hair in a few minutes. Although the shower can be inspirational at times and a destresser, avoid wasting water and help conserve it for other important things.
  • Recycling Bin: To be honest I don’t think I have ever seen a dorm with a recycling bin. All you have to do is buy another trashcan for your kitchen and label it “RECYCLING.” Many things students throw away are recyclable and if every college student took the initiative to recycle there would be an enormous impact.
  • Avoid Littering: It’s easy to litter, especially when there is no trashcan around. If you find yourself with an old piece of gum in your mouth or an empty soda can, hold onto it for a little longer. There are trashcans everywhere and there really is no excuse for littering except laziness and carelessness.
  • Purified Water: Bottled water creates lots of waste from all the empty plastic bottles. Buy a purified water pitcher to keep in your fridge and a rugged water bottle to carry around with you. Not only will you be helping the environment but you will also be drinker better water!
  • Buy Smart: When you buy a small cereal box every week instead of a family size box (which is always cheaper anyways) you create more waste and more energy is spent producing all the small cereal boxes. Buy in bulk as often as possible, try to team up with your roommates to buy as much as possible together to save money, and energy.
Go Green Or Go Home
Well, you should stay in school so don’t go home but you should really consider the benefits of living a greener life. You will save more energy, feel better about yourself, and you will be an example to others which will eventually create a domino effect of greenness. We all need to do our part in helping preserve the fragile ecosystems in which we live. We can’t afford to continue on this path of wasting energy and resources.
