Dorm Decorating Tips from Interior Designer Jill Vegas

Recently I’ve been reading through New York interior designer Jill Vegas‘s Speed Decorating book, gleaning ideas for dorm decorating for college students. If your dorm room needs a face lift, look no further.

  1. Flowers. Bring the outdoors inside with some fresh flowers. If flowers aren’t in your budget, Jill says it’s fine to start small, like a hand-picked daisy in a cup.
  2. Stack your textbooks as a side table. If you love studying on the couch but can’t front the bill for a side table, make the most of those expensive textbooks and stack them up to rest your drink, cell phone, and snacks on.
  3. Paint your bookshelves. If you’re not allowed to paint the dorm room walls, paint your bookshelves instead. Known for her “bombshell bookcase”, Jill recommends fire engine red.
  4. Floor pillows. If sitting at a desk isn’t helping you concentrate, floor pillows are a comfortable alternative.
  5. Corral the cords. If you have a heap of cords on the floor by your desk, hide them by using Velcro strips or tape to the back of your furniture.
  6. Infuse some personal style. Dorm rooms can seem sterile and sadly lacking in personality. Bring part of yourself into the equation by decorating with things you care about, like photos of friends and family or the seashells you collected from your spring break in Mexico.

If you want more quick and easy decorating suggestions, check out Speed Decorating on Amazon. It is eye candy and will make for a great conversation starter.
