One of our newest features is the Career Experts page which features professionals in a variety of different careers. Our experts regularly blog about valuable information for college students. To welcome our experts, we will periodically feature a get to know you Q&A. First up is Alexandra Straub, an automotive journalist from Vancouver, Canada whose job involves test-driving the sweetest cars around and writing reviews about them.

  • My Colleges and Careers: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Alexandra Straub: The best advice I’ve ever received was to be myself. I know it sounds cliché but it’s true. People who aren’t ‘real’ always expose their true colors in time. Put your cards on the table, if people don’t like it, that’s just how life is sometimes.
  • MCC: If you could only eat one food (calories barred), what would it be?
AS: I’m a total pepperoni and cheese pizza junkie. Gosh, I could eat this everyday. But if I had to choose a healthy option, I’m a huge fan of butternut squash soup.
  • MCC: If you were living on a desert island with one book, what would it be?
AS: I’d love to live on a deserted island!! To narrow down my book selection to only one would be rather tough. I’d say, first and foremost, it would be The Book of Mormon but other than that, anything by Chelsea Handler. Her humor isn’t very tame but she’s hilarious. I’ll need to be entertained if I’m stuck on an island.
  • MCC: What music are you listening to right now?
AS: I’m listening to September’s “Cry For You” right now- the extended mix, of course. When it comes to music, it’s techno all the way, baby! I love Euro Trash techno, trance, dance music, and any song that can go on for 10 minutes. Other than that, I really enjoy 90’s alternative and grunge, heavy metal, 90’s music, and opera. I like a little bit of everything.
  • MCC: If you weren’t a automotive journalist, you’d totally be a _________.
AS: If I weren’t an automotive journalist, I would totally be rich!! Jokes. I would be climbing the corporate ladder in Terminal Operations. I previously worked at an international marine container terminal and really liked it. The money was great and I loved the people I worked with. I just needed a change of scenery and want to make journalism my career.

About Alexandra Straub

Did someone say something about cars or motorcycles? If so, Alexandra Straub’s ears just perked up. A car lover to the core, she recognized her passion for vehicles at an early age. Instead of playing with Barbies™, she played with Micro Machines. Instead of playing ‘house’, she sat in the front seat of her mom’s Mazda MPV and pretended she was a racecar driver. She was even caught, multiple times, reading issues of Road & Track or Car & Driver under her covers when she was supposed to be sleeping. Busted. But that passion turned into a reality when she started her career as an automotive journalist almost a decade ago. While completing her English Literature degree from UBC (she can right and read good!), she was offered a gig to start writing automotive news, which then lead to automotive reviews. She hasn’t turned back since. She has driven almost everything from sub compacts to super cars and loves every second.
