How to Prepare for a Test: The Morning of
It’s now the morning of the test and any studying you should do has been done. Here are a few ways to calm those nerves and get your brain in gear to do the best on your tests:
1. Get a full night’s sleep. This can mean anywhere from 5-9 hours depending on the person. You should know by now how much sleep you need to feel refreshed but not groggy from oversleeping. Plan to get that sleep so that your mind is alert when you wake up.
2. Wake up with plenty of time before the test. You don’t want to be rushed the morning of a stressful test. You’ve got enough going on that running behind can really hurt you. Make sure you have time to wake up, shower, eat, and review before you leave your apartment.
3. Eat a healthy breakfast. Even though your brain is awake, it won’t be functioning at its highest until the rest of your body has been nourished. Opt for a well balanced breakfast with protein. Scramble some eggs or eat Greek yogurt with fruit or honey and granola.
4. Review your notes. Now really isn’t the time to be studying, but a simple review can refresh the material in your mind and remind you of things that maybe you’ve had a hard time remembering. Don’t read over everything, just the bits that you think you’ll need the most.
5. Take a different route to the testing center. If you always drive or walk one way, try taking a different route this time. While it may not cause you to have to do a whole lot of extra active thinking, it will get your brain noticing that things are different. This will keep you alert for those tough problems.
6. Relax. Before starting your test take a few moments at your desk to just breathe. If you’re overly stressed then you won’t be able to think as clearly as you would otherwise. Getting a good oxygen flow to your brain and the rest of your body will help boost your mood and your score.
