Life coaches usually help older people get their lives organized, not college kids. Nonetheless, I received a call last week from my mom who helps coach people and she told me that she was going to do a coaching session with me. I talk with my mom a lot but this was something we had never done before so I was a little hesitant. I am in college and working full-time so my life is pretty hectic, and she was able to see that. I am going to tell you exactly what she told me (don’t worry, it takes only a few minutes) and hopefully you will see great results like I have seen in only a week.
First off you need to think of the three main things you want to achieve or do in the next 5 years. Be it marriage, a college degree, or starting a company, pick only 3 things. Now think about each of these three things and how much time you spend per item each week. I found that I was spending 90% of my free time on my third goal and 0% on my first goal. My priorities were was out-of-wack and this simple exercise helped me to see that. If you are spending equal amounts of time on each goal, then keep going!
Second, my mom asked me what were 5 things that I wanted to do every day. I am horrible with routines so I was really desperate for help. I easily chose 5 things and I am not sure why but ever since then I have been doing all 5 things every day. It usually takes a bit of sacrifice (in my case I have to get up 30 minutes earlier ever morning to get those things done) but it will be worth it. The key to success in all of this life planning and organizing is the simple but effective act of writing things down. That helps you to not only make it official but also you print out your goals and put them everywhere to remind you and help you stay focused.
To conclude my mom had me look up SMART goals. A SMART goal is a goal where you don’t just think of something simple but you write things down and make the goal Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Once you have made your goal a SMART goal, it becomes much easier to accomplish. Only 8% of New Years resolutions are accomplished, and this is simply because they do not take the time to sit down and write a detailed description of their desires and how, when, where and why they are going to accomplish them.
And that’s it! It’s simple, but very effective. Feel free to leave any comments if you have questions or experiences you would like to share.
