Growing Plants In Your Dorm Room

Dorm rooms are inherently boring and some students will do anything they can to make them clean and fun. Plants are a great way for students to bring some life into their apartments without spending much money. Students constantly throw out seeds and stems from their everyday food that they can actually use for plants instead of throwing them away. Some students are worried that plants take too much time and effort to maintain but they are actually pretty easy if you pick the right ones.

You can take the pit from the avocado you just ate and after sticking a bunch of toothpicks in it so it’s not completely submerged, put it in a cup of water. Make sure the pointed side is facing up. If you are lucky, you will get an avocado tree. You probably won’t get any fruit from the tree, but the tree can grow to be pretty big.

Another thing you can do with your fruit is to twist off the leaves from your pineapple and put them in a cup of water. Make sure only the bottom is in the water, otherwise you will drown the plant. If you are lucky the plant will start growing and if you are even luckier, a little pineapple will start to grow!

You can also try planting some seeds from your oranges and other fruit. Most of the seeds will be sterile so just plant all your seeds and one is likely to start growing. If you are looking for a plant that actually bears fruit like lemons, it will be much easier if you go to the store and buy a dwarf lemon tree.

There are many other plants like herbs and aloe vera that are great for college apartments. Not only do these plants look and smell good but they can also be used for food, sunburns and other things. Plants can bring life and color to normally dull and boring living spaces, and they usually don’t require that much care.

Studies have shown that plants make people feel better. They also filter the air and replace Carbon Dioxide with Oxygen, which will make you and your roommates feel and look better. What college student wouldn’t want a natural air filter that smells and looks great and costs almost nothing?

What kinds of plants do you have in your apartment? If you have had success with any of these or other plants, leave a comment and let us know.

  • Very nice written. Me too agree with dorm room planting, it’s a very easy and time consuming task for everyone and will give definite result. I also prefer hydroponic method to make my plants healthy and stay long life. I am looking for more helpful tips on indoor and hydroponic gardening from you which will probably work out in plant growing.
