How We Continue to Honor Veterans

Every year on November 11, Americans everywhere stop to remember those who have served and fallen in the line of duty to preserve our freedoms throughout the years. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month is of particular significance since it was the day that World War I came to a close in 1918.

Today people continue to honor the living veterans in many different ways.

  • President Obama recently designated the month of November as Military Family Month in hopes that Americans will continue to recognize and support the families of veterans
  • The post 9-11 G.I. Bill provides those who served in the military up to 100% of tuition and expenses at military friendly schools
  • As a federal holiday, many people are given the day off work
  • In Iowa, companies that employ veterans are required to give them the day off
  • On Veterans Day, many companies provide extra perks to veterans, such as a complimentary oil change from an automotive repair shop

The United Sates isn’t the only one that recognizes their veterans on November 11. In the commonwealth countries — Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom — November 11 is referred to as Remembrance Day and people sell and wear poppy flower pins with proceeds going to veterans.

May we always remember the sacrifices that won our freedom. Thank a veteran today.
