Careers as Cooks, Short Order
Short order cooks specialize in the preparation of foods and dishes that can be prepared in a short amount of time. They are sometimes known as deli cooks, snack bar cooks, line cooks, pizza makers, or preparation cooks.
People with this job grill, cook, fry, steam, and prepare food before serving it to customers. They also take and fill orders, work as a cashier, coordinate food preparation, order supplies, and clean food preparation areas, counters, and equipment.
Short order cooks use a variety of tools on a daily basis: steamers, graters, steam kettles, fruit zesters, knives, slicers, stoves, ovens, strainers, and several other kinds of kitchen equipment.
They also use technology like point-of-sale computer terminals and software and inventory management software so things in the kitchen run smoothly and customers’ needs are met.
