Careers as Derrick Operators, Oil and Gas
Derrick Operators rig derrick equipment and operate pumps to circulate mud through drill holes. They also inspect the derricks, repair equipment necessary for the derrick to operate, align the derrick elements by climbing the platforms while in a safety harness, and many other duties.
These operators are also known as derrick hands, derrick men, floor hands, derrick operators, and derrick workers.
Most operators receive on the job training and do not require formal education. However, a Derrick Operator needs to be knowledgeable in Mechanics, Mathematics, English, and training techniques. Be sure to look at the courses being offered in many locations to see what classes you can take to prepare you to be a derrick operator.
