Careers as Electricians

Nearly every building is connected to a power grid of some kind. The electric wires run through our homes and offices like necessary blood vessels for modern life. Electricians are the ones responsible for installing and maintaining the wires, breakers, transformers, fuses, and other equipment necessary to bring power to every part of a building.

Most electricians specialize in one of two areas. Installation Electricians work on installing wiring and other equipment often work during a building’s construction. Maintenance Electricians are responsible for running tests on electrical equipment and power grids and making necessary maintenance and repairs.

Electricians can work on construction sites for homes, offices, and virtually any kind of building. They often work in large factories monitoring and repair electrical equipment. Electricians use a variety of tools such as electrical counters and meters to test electrical wiring and equipment. They also use a variety of tools that are needed to work with the wiring, as well as saws, drills, and other tools used to create paths for the wiring through wood, metal, and plastic.

Electricians are trained through on-the-job apprenticeship programs. There are also vocational programs that teach the necessary skills to become an electrician such as blueprint reading, principles of electricity, mathematics, and other similar skills. Nearly all of these apprenticeship programs and vocational schools require a high school diploma or a GED certificate. Be sure to check out the programs being offered in many locations and connect yourself to a better position as an Electrician.
