Careers as Desktop Publishers

Desktop publishers are responsible for the layout of text and graphics in books, newspapers, magazines, and other printed publications. Recently, they have also commonly been responsible for the layout of web pages. They are often responsible for creating graphics for publications, such as charts and graphs, and also find and edit photographs.

Desktop publishers are often called publications specialists, electronic publishers, DTP operators, desktop publishing editors, electronic prepress technicians, electronic publishing specialists, image designers, typographers, compositors, layout artists, and Web publications designers.

Many desktop publishers receive on the job training, though candidates with formal training or a degree are more likely to find a job as a desktop publisher. One of the best ways to train for desktop publishing is to take courses in graphic arts, graphic design, graphic communications, as well have strong computer skills.
