Sensei, Jedi Masters, and College Mentors

0

Hopefully seeing movies like “The Karate Kid” and “Star Wars” you have learned a thing or two about the benefits of a mentor. Imagine if Daniel hadn’t had Mr. Miyagi to help him hone his karate skills, and do we dare think of what would have happened if Anakin hadn’t had the help of Obi-Wan?

In all seriousness, mentors are crucial to any student looking to develop himself and obtain real world experience and knowledge. Many successful people have attributed most of their success to help from a mentor. Students will find that mentors can help students prioritize their work as well as give advice as to certain classes or jobs they should pursue.

Student Mentors

Mentors can be very valuable resources for any student seeking direction in their life.

How to Get a Mentor

This part can be easy and extremely difficult at the same time. Obviously the mentor you choose should be in the area you are interested in. If you want to become a doctor, find a doctor. If you want to work as an FBI agent, find an FBI agent. For some people this can be fairly easy, but for others it may take some hard work. Make sure you participate in college clubs and if available lecture series’ so you can meet the professionals in your area. This networking will help you to come into contact with a variety of professionals, of which you can choose who best fits your needs and personality.

Once you have found a good candidate for your mentor, ask them out to lunch. Even if you have never met them before, don’t be afraid to explain to them how you have been looking for someone to be your mentor and that you would like to take them out to lunch to ask them questions about their work and experience. Many professionals are especially helpful and understanding with students, so take advantage of this! Not to mention they usually pay for your lunch.

Why to Get a Mentor

Many professionals love to share their knowledge, especially with students. They also like to help students to avoid mistakes they made in their career. This alone is very valuable information and can save you up to years of wasted time and money. A mentor has satisfaction in knowing they are helping you and that their opinions are respected. A mentor usually is someone who is successful and who has time to help others because he is more advanced in his job to the point where he can meet with you occasionally and send you emails answering your questions and concerns.

Mentors can be very valuable resources for any student seeking direction in their life. A mentor never requires payment for consulting services, their payment is the satisfaction of seeing someone else have success and happiness in their life. Whether you have someone in mind already, or you have no idea as to who can be your mentor, start looking today to find the perfect person. You never know, they might help you to become the next Karate Kid or Jedi Master.
