A significant part of college and university life involves researching information for assignment and papers. Students who learn how to access the best research information will benefit the most from their education. Here are the top 5 places to research:

1. Campus library database. Most colleges offer access to academic research databases online and this is an important source for the latest in research and peer reviewed articles and papers. Libraries will offer assistance to students in learning how to properly and easily access online research databases. Online colleges also offer access to academic research databases to their students.

2. Journals. Most academic fields have peer reviewed journals that concentrate on that particular subject. Many campus libraries have collections of these journals available, or access to them through the academic research database.

3. Encyclopedias. Campus or public libraries have collections of encyclopedias and research reference books which are an excellent source of credible information for students. Encyclopedias and reference books can also be the first place to get an overview of a subject and to get the names of books and articles that will lead to more thorough research in a particular field.

4. Library collections. Search the campus library or the public library for books related to the topic you are working on. Some assignments require that your research material is no older than 10 years or even less, so it is a wise idea to check the publication date of all your research material to ensure it fits with the requirements.

5. Reference Lists. Search text books for reference lists of works used by the author of the textbooks. This is an easy way find similar works relevant to the topic you are working on. Once you have identified them, borrow the books from the library. If the book is not available at your campus or public library, most libraries have an inter-library service where they will bring in the book from another library for you to borrow for a period of 2 – 3 weeks.
