Careers as Agricultural Workers, All Other
Individuals who are interested in planting and harvesting crops, attending to livestock, and breeding animals are excellent candidates for careers as agricultural workers!
Agricultural workers have the important job of getting agricultural products to consumers. They plant and harvest crops, irrigate and work with animals at farms, ranches, nurseries, greenhouses, or slaughterhouses.
People with this career also plant crops, irrigate, prune, pack and prepare grains, vegetables, fruits, fiber, and trees for shipping. Some agricultural workers are equipment operators and use tractors, fertilizers, raking equipment, haybines, combines, balers, threshers, and trucks.
Farm and ranch workers attend to cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, horses, fish and bees raised to supply products for consumers. They feed, herd, weigh, load, and milk animals so people across the country can benefit from their products.
Breeders raise animals for either production purposes or for pets. They research the breeding history of animals and keep records to ensure the best products are being produced or the animals are bred with qualities that make them good pets.
Agricultural workers typically learn important skills on the job while animal breeders require work experience and a college degree. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts there will be a large increase of agricultural worker jobs available.
Regardless of their agricultural background or experience, students can start a prosperous career as an agricultural worker in many locations.
