Careers as Cooks, Private Household

People who feel most at home in the kitchen preparing and serving delicious meals, may want to look into a career as a private household cook. These professionals, sometimes known as certified personal chefs, prepare foods, serve dishes, and plan menus.

However, they do more than just that. Private household cooks plan menus that meet employers’ dietary needs, prepare food for parties and special events, specialize in specific dishes, create new dishes, shop for food and supplies, organize kitchens, and serve meals to the family they are employed by and their guests.

Private household cooks, are usually good communicators, time managers, decision makers, learners, and managers. They are also good at working with their hands, are service oriented, and are aware of others’ needs.

When they are not preparing and serving food, private household cooks gather information, manage the use of resources, organize and plan, estimate sizes and amounts, and think creatively on a daily basis.

Most private household cooks have an associate’s degree. An educational program will help students gain a working knowledge of food production, personal service, clerical skills, economics, accounting, sales and marketing, administration and management, and so much more.

Regardless of their background or experience, students can embark on a rewarding career as a private household cook in many locations.
