Arbitrators, mediators and conciliators are professional peace makers. They help people come to agreements and help them make decisions to compromise.

People with this job help people settle issues, come to agreements and work to understand people’s needs. They use mediation techniques, set appointments, prepare settlement agreements, give presentations and arrange and conduct hearings.

Usually arbitrators, mediators and conciliators work in the legal field. When there is a disagreement, two parties may decide to recruit the help of a mediator to help them make decisions and come to an agreement. While judges and lawyers come to decisions themselves, mediators help other come to their own decisions. They listen to what each party has to say, then help them find a way to compromise.

Arbitrators, mediators and conciliators rely on their knowledge of English, laws, government, sociology, psychology, math, management and human resources to do their job.

To land a good job in this field, you will need a bachelor’s degree. Employment opportunities for arbitrators, mediators and conciliators is expected to grow quickly. The average hourly wage for people with this job is about $24 while the average annual income is about $50,000.
