Automotive service technicians and mechanics do things like inspect, repair and maintain car parts as well as do things like change oil, rotate tires, plan vehicle repairs and diagnose problems.
As an automotive service technician or mechanic, you will use lots of tools on a daily basis: power tools, lathes, grinding machines, pneumatic wrenches, welders, jacks, screwdrivers, pliers, engine analyzers and more.
Most automotive service technicians and mechanics work in repair shops and have 40-hour work weeks. Sometimes they work with other mechanics and they often work closely with customers to explain problems and advise on repairs.
To land a great job in this field you will need technical training and an associate’s degree will help you as you apply for jobs. An educational program will give you knowledge of things like math, computers, mechanics and technology.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects job opportunities to increase and reports that the average hourly wage for automotive service technicians and mechanics is about $16 while some make more than $28 an hour.
