Automotive specialty technicians specialize in a specific vehicle part and do everything: install, maintain and repair.

Automotive specialty technicians specialize in a specific area of a vehicle. They repair things like brakes, radiators, suspension systems ignitions, carburetors, mufflers, tail pipes and much more.

As an automotive specialty technician, you will spend most of your time examining parts, estimating repair costs, adjusting systems, locating malfunctions, inspecting new vehicles, tuning engines, installing parts and removing broken parts.

To do this, you will use lots of tools: brake bleeders, engine oil pressure testers, manifold gauge sets, power pullers, alternator testers and voltmeters, and that’s just scratching the surface.

Automotive specialty technicians are usually good at maintenance, repairing things, troubleshooting, critical thinking, installing parts and managing time.

An associate’s degree program will get you on the right path to have a a successful career as an automotive specialty technician. You will need a working knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, engineering, technology, computers, electronics, customer service and management.

Employment opportunities for automotive and specialty technicians are expected to increase. The average hourly wage for people with this job is about $16 and the average annual income is about $35,000.
