Avionics Technicians
Avionics technicians install, repair, test and maintain equipment in aircraft and space vehicles.
Avionics technicians are responsible for installing, testing, maintaining and repairing equipment in aircraft or space vehicles like radios, radar, navigation systems and missile control systems.
Other titles people with this job are known as include avionics electronics technician, avionics installer, avionics manager and avionics tester, among others.
As an avionics technician, you will set up and run ground support and test equipment for flight tests of electrical and electronic systems, test instruments, keep records, analyze flight test data and install, adjust and repair parts. You will also coordinate with technicians, engineers and maintenance specialists.
Avionics technicians are usually sensitive to problems, good at installing and repairing things, good at inductive reasoning and are service oriented.
You will use hammers, hex keys, multimeters, screwdrivers and pin punches to make sure aircraft are safe an efficient. You will also use different kinds of software like avionics system testing software, computer diagnostic software, data entry software, maintenance record software and spreadsheet and word processing software.
It is expected that job opportunities for avionics technicians will increase. To get a head start in this field you will need an associate’s degree. The average hourly wage for people with this job is about $23 and the average annual income is about $49,000.
