Brickmasons and Blockmasons

Brickmasons and blockmasons lay stone to act as foundations for structures and for landscaping purposes.

If you like to work with your hands and see the fruits of your labors on a daily basis, you will probably like a job as a brickmason or blockmason. People with this job lay things like brick, concrete block, structural tile, glass block, cinder block and terra-cotta block to repair and build things like walks, arches, partitions, sewers and more.

As a brickmason or blockmason you will lay foundations for structures and pathways, create corners, take measurements of distance and angles, connect bricks with cement or wires, repair brickwork and read blueprints.

Tools used by people in this job include blocks, pulleys, jacks, hammers, power saws, mortar mixers, welders and trowels as well as various kinds of software.

To be successful as a brickmason and blockmason you will need an understanding of building, design, construction, math, production and processing. You will need to be able to think critically, manage time and work with your hands.

Job opportunities for people in this career are expected to increase. The average hourly wage for a brickmason or blockmason is about $21 and the average annual wage is about $45,000.
