Food preparation and serving workers have the enjoyable job of preparing and serving foods at restaurants, cafeterias, cafes and more.

Who doesn’t like food? Everyone does and with a career in food preparation and serving, you could serve delicious dishes to hungry customers.

People in this field are sometimes known as deli managers, deli clerks, deli workers, school cafeteria cooks, dietary aides, car hops, preparation cooks and front line workers.

With this job you will take orders and payment, serve customers, prepare food for take-out orders, cook and re-heat food, maintain serving areas, serve drinks and wash cookware.

People in this field work at diners, fast food restaurants, cafeterias, cafes, delis and almost anywhere food is served.

You will use things like bar code readers, carts, conveyors, point of service workstations and various types of software on a daily basis. You will also use kitchen equipment to prepare food: deep fryers, slicers, food warmers, choppers and more.

People who do well as food preparers and servers are good communicators and listeners and are good at math, teaching and using their hands.

Job opportunities for food preparation and serving workers are expected to increase quickly. The average hourly wage for people with this job is about $7 and the average annual income is about $16,000.
