Construction Laborers

Construction laborers make it possible for skyscrapers to be erected, bridges to span waterways and trenches to drain water.

Construction laborers are at the heart of construction sites. They are the ones that make it possible for buildings, tunnels, highways, trenches and scaffolding to be built. They are the ones that use air hammers, measuring tools, surveying equipment, hand tools, cement mixers, earth tampers and mechanical hoists to erect and demolish structures.

People with this job also manage and prepare construction sites, set up supports on the sides of excavations, clean up rubble and help other craft workers. They even have the important job of removing hazardous waste like lead and asbestos.

Construction laborers are also known as punch out crew members, cement finishers, post framers, construction workers, helpers, curb and gutter laborers, drop crew laborers and drain layers.

With this career you will use tools like power drills, grinders and saws, blow torches, water trucks, pressure or steam cleaners, vacuum cleaners, manlifts, forklifts and levels.

Construction workers spend their time interpreting plans, positioning structural components, creating forms for pouring cement, signaling machine operators, taking measurements and making markings.

If you have good listening, communicating, critical thinking, math, teaching, coordination and monitoring skills, you will probably do well in this career. Construction workers also have to be good at using their hands and have good trunk strength.

Job opportunities for construction laborers are expected to grow very quickly. The average annual income for people with this job is about $13 and the average annual income is about $28,000.
