Students cultivate an understanding of the U.S. criminal justice system, its philosophy, development, and challenges, while investigating research methods, criminal offenses, and the principles of criminal culpability.

Within the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program, students may qualify for an internship program at a crime laboratory in their area. During this internship, students take part real-life crime scene investigations with experienced professionals’ supervision, while cultivating skills in one of the following areas of investigation: serology/DNA, toxicology, evidence, chemistry/controlled substances, photography, firearms, crime scene investigations, and identification/latent prints. As a point of reference, a possible internship opportunity example is with the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office in South Florida, the fourth largest county law enforcement agency in the U.S. serving 1.4 million people.

In the Corrections emphasis, students develop an additional expertise in the administrative and operational aspects of the U.S. correctional system. The emphasis explore challenges in community-based corrections while highlighting challenges in the corrections arena such as overcrowding, alternatives to incarceration, sentencing, inmate rights, and juvenile justice.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice may qualify for employment opportunities associated with computer crime, corrections, counterterrorism, crime scene investigation, detention, fraud investigation, homeland security, juvenile justice and detention, law enforcement, parole and probation, prisons, private investigations, or public safety.
