BS in Health Information Management

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management are prepared to manage information systems in America's hospitals.

The demand for health care professionals who have proficient technical skills is projected to increase as the U.S. government designates billions towards the America’s hospital medical records management and information technology systems. The Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management is designed to prepare graduates for careers within the expanding health information industry, by equipping them with problem solving skills and adaptability to support operations, management, and strategic initiatives within the health information field.

The curriculum focuses on:
- Planning, designing, managing, and evaluating electronic information systems
- Learning and applying research methods and critical thinking for health care issues, including the forces affecting health care delivery and health information systems
- Understanding basic supervisory and legal aspects of health information, comprehending the professional, ethical, and legal standards of health information management, as well as professional behaviors and problem solving

In order to qualify for admission into the Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management program, students must have earned their Kaplan University’s Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology program or a Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM)-approved Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology program.

A variety of employment opportunities exist in the field of health information. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management program can qualify for many opportunities, including careers in hospitals, long-term care facilities, physicians’ offices, health maintenance organizations, insurance companies, home health care, consulting companies, computer software companies, or government agencies. On the job responsibilities may include overall department management and supervision; generation and analysis of health care data; implementation of quality improvement processes, risk management techniques, compliance strategies, and reimbursement procedures; research; and evaluation of legal issues.
