Photography

In a study of photography, you learn the fundamentals of photography, SLR and digital photography production, and how to build a successful photography business.

Photographers capture moments, memories, and captivating images. Photographers can work in a variety of industries as portrait photographers, commercial photographers, sports photographers, wedding photographers, fine art photographers or stock photography. Opportunities for travel and a flexible work schedule are common perks of the job and many photographers are self-employed. The middle 50% of photographers earned between $20,620 and $43,530 in 2008.

Photography classes teach you fundamentals of photography including composition, framing, lighting and the cardinal “Rule of Thirds.” Once you have the basics down, explore more advanced techniques using different lighting, indoor and outdoor settings, and computer software such as Photoshop to enhance and edit your images. With recent evolutions in photography, programs include digital and traditional SLR photography and processing.

Since many photographers diversify their businesses to include cards and announcements, jewelry, and artwork that incorporates their photography, investing in related areas of study in graphic design, jewelry design, and framing is worthwhile. Other similar areas of study include commercial art and web design.
