Make Your Mark In Online School

Earning a degree from an online school is an easy and flexible way for people to go back to school. Working professionals and busy parents can earn their degree while keeping up with their other responsibilities.

As with any school experience, a positive relationship with the teacher can go a long way in helping with classwork, future courses, and even as a potential professional reference. Because all aspects of an online school take place in a virtual classroom, standing out can be difficult. Here are some tips on how to stand out in an online classroom to make the most of online school.

Participate

Most classwork in an online program is reading, listening, or watching lectures so finding ways to participate can be difficult. One way students can keep in touch with their professor is through e-mailing. Many classes have discussion forums for students to post ideas and respond to each other. Being an active member of these forums will help a great deal in showing the professor you care and want to participate. Another option will be chats, some professors will offer live chats where students can log on and ask questions and receive immediate feedback.

Ask Questions

For online school students, e-mails and forum posts are the virtual way of raising your hand. While asking too many simple questions that a student can easily answer themselves can make you look lazy or unprepared, legitimate questions about the course or clarification of the material are a good way of interacting with your teacher and helping them remember who you are.

Meet Deadlines

Assignments submitted online are time stamped down to the second, making a late assignment easily spotted by the instructor and impossible to hide. Some professors may understand the various reasons a student may have for turning in an assignment late, but it is never a good idea to have the professor remember you as the person who turns in assignments late.

Claim Your Identity

The anonymity involved with the Internet is a difficult obstacle to overcome sometimes. Many schools have student profiles where students can upload a personal photo that teachers have access to. Find out if your school offers this and be sure to fill out your profile and include a picture.

Sign Your E-Mail

Students can create a “signature” in their e-mail program that has their contact information like phone number, e-mail address, and websites, and that is automatically inserted at the bottom of all messages. This way when you e-mail your instructor they have all of your contact information in one convenient place.

Communicate Clearly

It can be very easy to take online comments out of context. Make sure your e-mails, instant messages, and forum posts are clear and professionally written to avoid confusion and false impressions. Students should also avoid “text speak,” a set of abbreviations used to make written communication faster, especially while texting with cell phones.

Don’t Be a “Flamer”

The fastest way to get noticed in a negative way is to be what is referred to as a “flamer," or someone who writes and sends angry or abusive comments online. It’s important to remember that any e-mail, forum post, and instant messages will be treated as if said out loud in a classroom. It may be easier to be insulting online, but if you want to do well in an online classroom you should avoid it.

Following these steps will help you stand out in an online classroom while earning your online degree.
