Many people are turning to online degrees to gain further education since they offer convenient flexibility and the ability to take classes from anywhere in the world. Online degrees aren’t without their challenges though. In order to succeed in an online classroom, we have prepared a three-part miniseries outlining key actions to do to do well in your program.
- How to Succeed in an Online Classroom: Set a Schedule and Stick to It. Carve out regular time from your schedule so you can study, read, complete assignments, and take tests. Utilize online calendar or text message reminders so you can stay on top of your game. It only takes 28 days to make a habit, so once you start, don’t quit! You’ll be that much more consistent after 28 successful days.
- How to Succeed in an Online Classroom: Avoid Procrastination. If you pre-chart what you will accomplish during the week and reward yourself accordingly, you’ll be less likely to procrastinate. Like Brian Tracy says in “Eat That Frog!”, eat the biggest, ugliest frog first. Tackle the most daunting project in pieces and you’ll get through it.
- How to Succeed in an Online Classroom: Save Your Work. To avoid losing your assignments online, take the time to save your assignments, submission confirmations, emails with professors, and forum posts. Back up your computer regularly so none of this important data is lost should your computer unexpectedly crash.
- How to Succeed in an Online Classroom: Get an Accountability Partner. If you’re like me and have let yourself off the hook for going to the gym, it’s wise to have an accountability partner. Accountability partners can help you keep your act together by giving tough love and hold you to pre-assigned consequences and rewards for completing projects. Just make sure they’re someone you have a healthy respect for!
The good news is that the skills you develop while completing your online degree are completely applicable in the workplace. In fact, a recent study showed that 100% of empowers surveyed reported that employees with online degrees performed better on the job as a result of their experiences.
