Getting that degree online is deceptively simple - there are plenty of pitfalls for the unsuspecting student to trip into if he or she is not careful. Here are the top five pitfalls to avoid if you want to graduate quickly and with a minimum of hassle:
1) Selecting a non-accredited institution. While a “degree mill” is cheap and easy, it’s only a quick fix and ultimately not worth the money and time you put into it. Always enroll in an accredited institution to ensure that your education is of the highest quality.
2) Slacking off. The benefit of online distance education is that you can finish your program at your own pace. The drawback of online distance education is that you can finish your program at your own pace. If you are not careful, you may not push hard enough to finish your degree in a sane amount of time. To avoid this, make sure you have a support system in place, composed of family, friends, and mentors, that will give you the push you need to work diligently towards your goals.
3) Working too hard. Online college lets you study whenever you want - even when it is time for a well-deserved break with friends, family, or a hobby. Don’t let school take over your waking hours. Leave some time for yourself and your relationships. What’s the point of an online degree if your life crumbles around you?
4) Isolation. Online college doesn’t afford you as many opportunities to interact with students and teachers as a traditional college does. Keeping yourself isolated can damage your motivation, narrow your perspective, and even depress you. To avoid this pitfall, keep in constant contact with a mentor or two. E-mail your professors often for feedback, advice, and encouragement. And try to get in touch with other students in your program to share your experiences and collaborate.
5) Not asking for help. Don’t try to figure out everything on your own. The college, if it’s a good one, will offer you tons of resources and avenues for assistance from everything from finances to academics.
