Choosing A Career In Welding

Modern machinery has resulted in a manufacturing industry that sports very few hands-on crafts. For this reason it is a lucrative and highly skilled trade that can also be an incredibly rewarding career.

To put it simply, welding is a way of joining components together. The process is frequently used in engineering and other manufacturing processes and can be used to join both metals and non-metals. Most welding is completed manually. It involves the use of welding equipment such as an electric arc or gas flame to melt the metal. The standard of the finished product is almost entirely dependent on the skills of the welder. Because of this, a career in welding is suited to perfectionists who enjoy a challenge and are good with their hands. It’s also important to have good eyesight, great hand-eye co-ordination, a good level of fitness and a drive to continually better yourself. For example, there are many additional skills a welder may learn throughout their career; it does not start and end with the use of basic welding equipment such as the welding positioner. Learning to use orbital welding equipment for instance, can help more experienced welders to increase their worth as well as the levels of pay they can demand.

Welding also stands as a fantastic career choice due to the significant shortage of labour within the industry. There are many competitive career paths for which it is very difficult to even get a foot on the ladder, let alone progress into higher positions. Welding however, offers many opportunities on all levels, such as the option to progress into supervisory or training roles.

Another massive benefit is the fact that those trained in the UK are able to work worldwide. This makes the career path perfect for those who love to travel, while opening countless doors for those who wish to utilise the best-paying and most lucrative job opportunities for those that can master the use of welding equipment.

So what is the best route to starting a successful career in welding? For those who are fresh out of school the best path to a career in welding is usually an apprenticeship; however, different companies will offer different levels of training. For example, some will train in how to use only the basic welding equipment while some will provide a very comprehensive training course, and will teach their students to use all manner of welding equipment such as orbital welding equipment and plasma cutters.

Those who are looking to make a career change should look into enrolling in evening classes at a local college. These courses should be based largely around practical training but may also incorporate some academic training also. How long the course will take and how much it will cost will vary according to the extent and depth of the training given. In most cases however, it will only be necessary to perfect the basic skills before finding employment as a welder. Other skills can be developed while on the job.
