Reasons to tell your Boss You’re Going Back to School

Going back to school once you’ve started a career is never without its obsticles. One of those might be how to juggle your current work situation. Many employees take advantage of online classes so that they can easily work them into their individual schedules and take classes at their own pace. Whichever route you chose to take, make sure you discuss your education plans with your boss early on to avoid confusion and reap these possible benefits.

1. Tuition Reimbursement- Many companies now days are encouraging their employees to go back to school and encourage this by paying part or all of the student’s tuition. Check your company handbook to know what your company offers before bringing it up with a manager. Some employers have limits on the types of courses they will pay for so you might want to consider this as well.

2. Possible Promotions- If you’re working on a degree that is required for a position in your company, you could be considered for promotions before you have been awarded your degree. Make sure your employer knows that you’re serious about school and that you’re going to use your education to benefit the company.

3. Work Support- Making your employer aware of your commitments before overtime at work is needed is a great idea. You’re boss is likely to be more understanding if you are unable to stay late or work on weekends. Just make sure that your schooling doesn’t cut into regular work hours. Expanding your education will make you look like a goal oriented go-getter and who doesn’t want that reputation around the office?

It is important that you do not allow your boss to make you feel like going back to school might be a bad idea. It is not up to your supervisor to tell you what you should and shouldn’t do in your spare time. As long as going to school does not cut into your work performance than it is not their place to advise you for or against it. Hopefully your employer will be more supportive and will see that an investment in you is also an investment in their company.
