Online colleges and universities do not require many of the supplies that are typically needed for traditional brick and mortar classes. Since the delivery format is primarily through the internet, the most important tools include a computer and access to the internet.

Computers and Software

The course materials that are delivered through most online colleges and universities are designed to operate on any standard computer. Many students prefer to use a laptop computer for their studies because a laptop can store all of their schoolwork in a portable manner. Desktop computers are also useful for completing online courses. It is helpful to have a computer equipped with a recent version of one of the standard word processing software programs. Students will also need to make sure that their web browsers are updated to the current versions. Virus protection software is always a good idea for anyone who intends to work online.

Reliable Broadband Connection

Online classes require reliable, fast connections to the internet. Some of the course materials may be delivered through video or audio, which requires at least a broadband connection to be the most effective. It is possible to use a slower connection to access classwork, but it can be frustrating and time consuming. Students who do not have reliable internet service in their homes can access their courses through wireless connections at local libraries or retail locations. Many coffee shops and restaurants will allow you to use their wireless connection with a purchase of a food item.

Books and Other Course-Specific Items

Many online colleges and universities provide all of their course material through online sources. Books, videos, and audio recordings can be accessed through a course website. There are some cases when a student will need to purchase special materials to help facilitate the learning process. In general, however, an online student will spend far less time and money buying hard copy textbooks. Writing materials are also largely unnecessary since the homework is all submitted through a digital format. There may be times when access to a printer can be helpful in processing some of the coursework that is required.
