1. Calendars
At the beginning of each term, review the syllabus for each class. Plot the due dates for all papers, projects, quizzes, mid-terms and final exams on a paper calendar.
2. Regular Study Schedules
Set aside consistent times each week to study, and stick to your schedule. Treat these hours like a part-time job.
3. Class Activities
If your classes feature virtual chats or discussions, participate in these activities. Think of them as attending classes in a traditional college setting.
4. Books
Purchase physical textbooks rather than e-books. Let their visual appeal give you a break from the computer.
5. Note-taking
Take handwritten notes on assigned reading. Keep a notebook beside you during online discussions and jot down your thoughts and questions as you would during a classroom lecture.
6. Group Studying
Study groups help traditional students succeed. Online students can arrange to study together using virtual chats or by phone. You may even live close enough to some classmates to meet in person.
7. Outlines, drafts and critiques
For writing assignments, complete outlines and drafts of your work. Have a friend or classmate read your work and give feedback. Read over and revise papers before submitting your final work, and always cite sources.
8. Instructors
One-on-one communication with instructors is often key to success. Traditional students speak with instructors after class or visit them during office hours. As an online student, you can arrange to chat, phone or email your instructors with questions or for feedback.
9. Student support resources
Explore resources that your college may offer such as online career services, libraries, advisors or learning support.
10. Alternative study locations
Spend some of your study time at the local library or another location that provides a change of scenery and the ability to focus on your coursework.
