Online Degrees That Will Help You Become A Teacher

Online education is the latest wave in higher education, and one that let’s more working adults return to college than ever before to become qualified to have the career of their dreams. If your dream is to become a teacher, online education may be able to help you. Not all online degrees offer the same benefits, so to find the program right for you, consider the following:

- What kind of teacher do you want to become? While teachers are often lumped into the same category, teaching young children in an elementary school is very different than teaching high school calculus or college history. Becoming a college professor requires a master’s degree to become an adjunct professor, and a doctorate to become a full professor. A four year degree is sufficient, though, for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. There also are specialized master’s degrees for working with children with learning disabilities, designing literacy programs, and even adult education.

- What kind of hands-on experience does the online degree offer you? As you look at each degree’s program, evaluate whether it has made arrangement for student teaching opportunities. You may love children, but many education students quickly switch majors after their first student teaching opportunity.

- What is the school’s reputation? Find out whether the college is accredited by a group like the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and what kind of track record it has for placing its graduates in jobs after graduation. Positions in education are especially scarce right now with budget cuts across the country, which makes access to a strong career center and alumni network more important than ever before.

- Is it really an online degree? If your online degree is from a college that happens to be physically located nearby, then a requirement that you present a final paper in person may not be a problem. If your program is being run by a college that is physically located a few thousand miles away, however, this distinctly off-line requirement will be a hardship for you to fulfill.
